Awka kingmakers reportedly dethrone traditional ruler

The Awka Council of Kingmakers in Anambra State, on Sunday, reportedly dethrone the traditional ruler of Awka kingdom, Obi Gibson Nwosu over alleged violation of the community’s constitution.
The kingmakers were said to have leveled 18 allegations against him, including accusing him of violating the Traditional Rulers Amended Constitution for Awka 1986, as well as the Code of Conduct which he reportedly signed on January 1, 2000 after he was crowned.
Members of the council and kingmakers took the decision in liaison with the Ndichie of Awka, while addressing reporters yesterday. The statement was signed by Chief Emmanuel Okechukwu and Obuora Essell.

The embattled monarch, however, dismissed the group, saying they have no such powers to remove him as they were not the authentic kingmakers of Awka.

The President-General of Awka Development Union, Mr. Tony Okechukwu, who is loyal to the monarch, described the alleged dethronement as laughable, adding that as the President-General, he was the one empowered by the virtue of his office to appoint kingmakers.
